About SMPTE

The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers is a
non-profit organization with a number of goals. First is to
promote interoperability between equipment manufacturers
through the creation of standards. This is done through the
engineering committees which are basically divided into
television, film, and digital cinema. The contributions of the
engineering committees are standards, recommended
practices, and engineering guidelines. SMPTE standards
are available individually or collectively from headquarters.
Another goal of SMPTE is education. To this extent, the
society plans conferences where industry leaders present
white papers on research and new methodology. Additionally,
there is an on-line bookstore where excellent books are
available for purchase. SMPTE also maintains a database
of job openings for employers and perspective employees.

SMPTE is an organization with local sections located
throughout the world. While we encourage visitors to
attend our Atlanta section meetings, there are many benefits
to becoming a SMPTE member. One of the biggest benefits
is a subscription to the SMPTE Journal, a world-class publication.
The Journal publishes white papers presented at the conferences
in addition to providing information about the industry and is
available through no other means than membership. SMPTE
encourages students to attend chapter meetings, form sections
in areas where local sections do not exist, and offers funding
to help establish student sections. The local sections are all
about forming friendships and alliances in the industry. Come
to an Atlanta Section meeting and join us!
