November Meeting

Monday November 9, 2009

Refreshments: 6:30 PM     Presentation:  7:30 PM
Turner Techwood Campus - 1000 Building (See Map)

Part One:

New Portable Wide-Angle HDTV Lens for High-End Production:
Underlying Design Strategies and Technologies

And Part Two - A "Mini-Presentation" on Future Technology:

Lens Considerations for Ultra-HDTV (4K and 8K) and 3D-HD

Presented by Mr. Laurence J. Thorpe, Canon Broadcast

Mr. Thorpe's presentation describes the technologies underlying a third generation 2/3-inch HD lens having a wider angle of view, greater focal range, and higher optical imaging performance than its predecessors. Diverse optical, opto-mechanical, and digital technologies were mobilized to meet these design criteria. Computer simulation optimized multiple imaging parameters to ensure high contrast and MTF across the 16:9 HD image plane. The use of spot diagram computer optimization techniques was central to the performance ultimately achieved.

Advances in opto-mechanical design strategies coupled with new exotic materials for multilayer coatings contributed to a significant reduction in optical artifacts, flare, and ghosting phenomena that are traditionally stimulated by strong light sources inside and outside the field of view. 3D CAD-CAM techniques were used to shape the design of a new digital drive unit that lowered the fatigue factor associated with prolonged shooting durations. The drive unit incorporates Canon-developed, ultra-compact precision rotary encoders embodying a unique Micro Roofmirror Array (MRA) technology capable of .1um position detection to produce 16-bit representations of the position of the zoom, iris, and focus controls. Please note that prior security clearance is required if you don't hold a Turner ID badge. Please sign up here before Monday November 9 NOON for access to the Techwood campus. Students are always welcome - please join us and bring a colleague.

The November 2009 meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 18

Alan Chevrier of Texscan MSI will be giving a presentation on the company's "EAS Express" product. The "EAS Express" is designed to provide IP network capabilities and functionality to the legacy TFT EAS 911 box that so many know and love <*tsk*>. It appears that TFT stopped product development on the EAS 911 product line once the initial round of boxes were placed in service at broadcast (and cable) facilities around the country. While the folks at TFT may not have sensed a need in the industry to modernize their product, the Texscan folks did -- and have done the job instead. After all, are you running the same plant you did in 1997? Pizza dinner will be sponsored by Texscan MSI. Click on the SBE Logo above for additional meeting details, and to sign up to attend.

Future Meetings (Tentative)

December: Annual Holiday Get-Together with AES and SBE (A New Location This Year)
January: Contribution Quality using JPEG2000 and IP Infrastructure
February: Currently Being Firmed Up
March: Managed Routing in IP Networks
May: Special All-Day Seminar

Job Posting
