The science of data storage is advancing on three fronts: video/data tape, optical media, and solid-state (flash) memory. With each release of a new format for digital capture comes the requirement for removable media to store that content. The expectation for faster transfer speeds and higher storage capacities has challenged media manufacturers to develop technologies to meet this requirement at a viable price point. This session will focus on tape, disc and flash memory as the enabling technologies supporting Sony’s HDCAM SR, HDCAM, XDCAM HD, and XDCAM EX formats. Please bring a colleague.
Wayne Desmond started his career in 1981 with RKO Tape Corporation, a high-speed audio/video tape duplication facility, where he headed up QC Operations from 1983 to 1988. Over the next fourteen years, he supported US audio/video duplicators for the Magnetic Tape Divisions of Agfa Corporation and BASF Corporation in Technical Support and Senior Engineer roles respectively. He represented these divisions on the AES/ANSI Joint Technical Commission for the Preservation & Restoration of Optical and Magnetic Media and has presented technical papers and workshops at seminars including the ITA (International Tape & Disc Association), AES (Audio Engineering Society), and SMPTE. Wayne joined Sony in 2002 as National Training Manager responsible for product training for Consumer, Data and Professional recording media.
