October Meeting
Managing Aspect Ratios Using AFD (Advanced Format Descriptor)
October 8, 2007
7:15 pm – 8:15 pm
Location:
Turner Broadcasting
1050 Techwood Drive
Atlanta, GA 30318
1000 Building
Multi-purpose Conference Room (See Map Below)
The migration from 4:3 SD to 16:9 HDTV programming and the rapid introduction of widescreen displays in the home has raised the problem of managing the aspect ratios so that the viewer sees an image that is optimized for the display being used. Broadcasters will continue to use new and repurposed program material produced in 4:3 aspect ratio, as well as 16:9, and many home viewers will continue to use 4:3 sets, so multiple aspect ratios will coexist for many years. Problems that may arise include the dreaded "postage stamp" effect, cropped pictures and distorted images.
This program will review the issues and explain how SMPTE, ATSC, and CEA implementations of Active Format Description (AFD) and Bar Data help solve aspect ratio problems in the broadcast facility, for transmission, and in the receiver. The studio systems presentation will expose real, large scale, customer implementations where automatic aspect ratio control is performed today using AFD.
The Program will be presented by Michel Proulx, CTO of Miranda Technologies
