August Meeting:

NASA and HDTV

After the Columbia accident, NASA embarked upon a program of imaging system upgrades.  The upgrades converted almost all of the cameras used for image analysis to HDTV.  This presentation will cover the upgrades done with a particular emphasis on an airborne HDTV imaging system used for shuttle launch imaging.  This system, the WB-57 Ascent Video Experiment (WAVE), utilizes a high altitude reserach aircraft that flies at 60,000 ft. and utilizes a 4150 mm reflector telescope lens.  Video from the launch of STS-114, July 2005, will be shown.

Rodney Grubbs of NASA and Walt Lindblom of Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) will be the presenters.  Rodney comes from a film and televison production background.  He is currently the NASA lead for the NASA Digital Television Program, which oversees digital television transition throughout NASA.  In this role, he coordinates DTV activities across NASA.  He is a co-manager of the WB-57 Ascent Video Experiment (WAVE) and supports operations for the system.  Walt Lindblom is a 30+ year veteran in video engineering and operations.  He is the video engineer for the NASA DTV Program.  Walt supported testing to develop system standards for the new ground based imaging systems installed at Kennedy Space Center and is the engineer for the HDTV airborne system.
