June Meeting
May the Cathode Ray Tube Monitor Rest In Peace… and Now What?
Monday June 8, 2009 WXIA-TV
Refreshments at 6:30 PM Meeting at 7:15 PM
Presented by Steve Mahrer, Director of Engineering, Business Development Group
With the demise of the “reference standard” CRT monitor, what display technology is available, suitable and even capable of replacing them? Steve Mahrer will take a look at the basics of display and explain how the newer technologies compare. Parameters discussed include colorimetry, resolution / MTF, contrast capabilities, off-axis viewing, gamma profiles, stability, size and cost. Technologies to be explored include CRT's, LCD (including LED vs. CCFL backlighting), Plasma, DLP, OLED, FED, SED and others. With 35 years experience in broadcasting, production, manufacturing and design, Steve holds two US patents, and currently resides in New Jersey. Please note that if you are coming via the downtown connector, you need to be on the Buford Highway "leg" to exit at Piedmont exit. WXIA is located at the former WATL facility: 1 Monroe Place NE, Atlanta 30324.

Join SBE for a look at automated audio monitoring
Can automated equipment monitor broadcast audio as well as humans? Can companies afford to hire enough humans to monitor their broadcasts? Broadcasters have wrestled with these questions for some time now. Surround sound formats and an increased number of program sources have made a difficult job almost monumental. There are countless fault types to be monitored; dead channels, channel reversal (front/rear, center/lfe), signal cancellation when down-mixing to stereo or mono, hum, clipping and many more. And of course, all this is supposed to be done in real time in an imperfect listening environment. When you consider all these issues, an automated approach becomes highly attractive.
An automated solution is not simple though. It has to mimic the judgment of a human with high accuracy and a low false-alarm rate. It must then communicate data quickly and succinctly to key personnel so appropriate action can be taken when a fault is identified.
This month the section is pleased to host Richard Cabot of Qualis Audio. He will discuss the issues in automated broadcast monitoring and describe the approach used in their recently introduced Sentinel surround monitoring product. Richard is an AES Fellow and past president of the society and has served in numerous other capacities for the society. He holds 14 patents and published over 30 technical papers in audio related topics. He is the founder of Qualis Audio. For more information, please visit the SBE website.
