Congratulations, Sterling

Congratulations are in order for Mr. Sterling Davis, Vice-President of Engineering for the broadcasting arm of Cox Enterprises. Sterling is the recipient of this year's NAB Television Engineering Achievement Award. Mr. Davis has been in the industry for more than four decades and is responsible for 15 television stations and 86 radio stations. Anyone who has had the pleasure of meeting him knows Sterling is a visionary and a southern gentleman. Cox owns and operates WSB-TV (and radio) in Atlanta. WSB (Channel 2 on the analog dial) is a class act in a magnificent building with an outstanding engineering staff. For more information and a great interview, see the April 20th edition of TV Technology in print or on the web.

Reconfigurable Solutions:

Video Signal Processing has “Finally” Become More Flexible

Presented by:  Jacques Patry, Director of Technology and Product Development

One of the main challenges that broadcasters face is the increasing speed at which they have to support various formats and standards, while at the same time providing viewers with a technically stable service. Over the years, many tools have emerged such as file-based workflow, asset management, etc. Those solutions became dominant because of their software / hardware adaptability and the benefit of the ever increasing power of microprocessors (Moore’s Law). But what about signal processing? While real time signal processing became more efficient, largely through better semiconductor design, its major shortcoming was its lack of adaptability.  It simply could not be repurposed. That has now changed.

With the introduction of video processing using FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays), Broadcasters can now benefit from repurposing available hardware. Join us for a look at the advantages, the limitations, intellectual property development issues, and a sneak preview of how the landscape will change for Broadcast Engineers in the years to come. Please sign up for access to the Turner Techwood Campus before Monday May 11 at noon. And as usual, construction in the area continues.
